STORM SHELTERS OKC
Above Ground Storm Shelters
Ask most folks whether they'd rather ride out a tornado in an below ground or above ground shelter, and the answer seems obvious: below, of course! Everyone knows you're safer in a tornado if you're nearer the ground, so you can't get much safer than being in it, right?
Not so fast. "Wizard of Oz""memories aside, there are some risks to take into account when considering below-ground shelters. For one thing, an underground shelter takes longer for you and your loved ones to enter when those precious last seconds are ticking away. Then there's the problem of getting out: below ground shelters typically only come with one entrance and exit combined, and if something heavy lands in front of that door and blocks it off, you're going to have trouble.
The good news is that above ground tornado shelters like ours, at Storm Shelters OKC, that meet standards set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), are perfectly safe no matter where they're located! In fact, the total number of people killed in a FEMA-compliant shelter, above or below ground, is exactly zero. That's right! ZERO. Nobody has ever been killed in A FEMA-compliant above ground shelter!
The below-ground conventional wisdom is, to be honest, a mere leftover from the days when edifices weren't built tornado-proof. Unlike regular structures, tornado pressure cannot suck the walls of an above-ground shelter into the air, nor can the high winds blow the walls or doors off. And durability isn't an issue, either. These days, 3,000 pounds of car can (and routinely does!) land on above ground shelters without affecting the folks inside. And if you live in an area with a high water table or propensity for flooding, below-ground shelters are probably not your driest option, or even safest.
The above-ground option also gives you the flexibility and safety of location; wherever your family congregates most often is where you'll want it to be. We will of course work with you directly to figure out the best place to locate one of your structures, to the point of visiting your property personally to help stake out the perfect place. However, keep in mind that if your property has heavy silicate or a high water table, a deeper foundation may be needed in order to keep your safe in mint condition for when you need it.
Did you know that the vast majority of injuries and deaths that occur from tornadoes happen to people on the way to their shelter? Sadly, it's true: debris from other structures is by far the most deadly element of such storms. Why not have a shelter inside the house and not venture out into the tornado at all? Best of all, the nature of an above ground storm shelter ensures that you can take it with you whenever you move. Try doing that with grandma's root cellar!
